Hello and welcome to our blog.

I’m speaking on behalf of an eclectic mix of international PhD students, all assembled under one loud and baked good filled roof. We have been brought together by a common supervisor, shared interests, and sheer luck. Together we aim to survive our projects, add a little extra to the knowledge of the world, and eat every biscuit that Scotland has to offer.

After discussing the challenges of writing, for many in a second or even third language, the common advice floating around was to practice as much as possible. Enter this blog. We shall practice our writing all while documenting our experiences in the wonderful world of early academia. If we’re lucky, perhaps we will offer a little bit of insight into the grad school experience while we’re at it. Or we will just end up chronicling the slow mental breakdown of approximately 6 moderately stable people. Only time will tell.

So join us on our journey as we try to make sense of our research, pretend like we know what we’re talking about, and cry into statistics manuals. Okay, that last one might just be me.

Love from the PhD Farm at the University of Edinburgh’s Department of Psychiatry.
